The next area we will focus on through the Lanier Makerspace/Innovation Lab experience is called 3D Design and Printing. This new club will provide students the opportunity to learn industry standard design software to create 3D models, which can then be rapidly prototyped using 3D printers.
Students learn basic 3D design skills using Trimble Sketchup and Autodesk Fusion 360. These computer aided design (CAD) programs direct their own learning and pursue ideas that interest them personally. The technology is the easiest and most rapidly evolving part, but focusing on creativity and adaptability will help us stay creative and relevant. Activities completed in this club promote attributes of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate through creative and critical thinking skills development.
This club is perfect for students who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or who are simply looking for an expressive way to create designs in 3D virtual simulations, all the way through the prototyping process in 3D printing. Some potential design ideas include smart phone cases to architectural complexes. Students develop spatial thinking, learn to anticipate possible challenges and identify probable solutions.
